Picture Addition Worksheet – Free Printable PDF

This free picture addition worksheet helps children add by counting real pictures instead of abstract numbers. Kids count the objects in each group — tomatoes, stars, fish, balloons, flowers and hearts — then add both groups and write the total in the answer box. Every sum stays within 5, making it ideal for a child’s very first addition lesson. Print it instantly — no login, no payment, no sign-up required.

About This Free Picture Addition Worksheet for Kids

This free picture addition worksheet fits one addition activity onto a single printable page. A name and date line runs across the top, a coloured title band names the activity, and one line of instructions sits beneath it. At Kidzolearn, every worksheet is 100% free to download and print — no login, no subscription, no payment required.

Six rows fill the page. Each row shows two groups of the same object separated by a plus sign, an empty answer box, and the matching number sentence printed to the right of it. The problems are 1 + 1 with tomatoes, 2 + 1 with stars, 2 + 2 with fish, 3 + 1 with balloons, 1 + 3 with flowers and 2 + 3 with hearts. No total goes above 5.

Rows four and five are the same pair the other way round — 3 + 1 and then 1 + 3. Both come to four. Most children notice this on their own, and it is their first encounter with the idea that the order of two numbers does not change the answer. Ask your child to count the first group, stop, then count the second. Counting straight through from one group into the next gives the right answer without any adding happening, which is easy to miss. What your child will learn from this worksheet

One page, one method, and several things being practised at the same time:

  • Count two separate groups of pictures and combine them into one total
  • Understand what the + and = symbols mean using objects rather than digits
  • Master every addition fact with sums up to 5 — 1+1, 2+1, 2+2, 3+1, 1+3 and 2+3
  • Match a picture quantity to the written number sentence printed beside it
  • Build pencil control and confidence by writing the answer neatly inside the box

These are the early number objectives set in Nursery, LKG, UKG, Reception and Year 1. Counting securely is what makes adding possible, so if any of these sums feel slow, our tracing lines worksheets for preschool are the place to build that foundation first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Kidzolearn worksheets really free?

Yes! Every worksheet on Kidzolearn is 100% free — no subscription, no login and no payment required at any time. Simply click the download button, save the PDF and print it instantly at home or in the classroom.

At what age should children start using this picture addition worksheet?

Most children are ready from around age four, once they can count a small group of objects reliably and get the same answer twice. Counting accurately matters far more than age here — a child who miscounts a group of five will get the sum wrong no matter how well they understand adding. Count each group out loud together before anything is written down.

How does this worksheet teach addition without using numbers?

Every row on this picture addition worksheet gives your child two visible groups to count instead of two abstract digits. Counting five hearts is far easier than reading “2 + 3”, so the child discovers the idea of combining groups first and picks up the symbols afterwards. The number sentence printed beside each row quietly links the pictures to their written form.

Is picture addition part of the official early years curriculum?

Yes. Adding within ten is a named objective in early years maths almost everywhere. Indian schools cover it across LKG, UKG and Grade 1; the UK sets it in the EYFS early learning goals and Year 1 of KS1; the US covers it in Kindergarten and Grade 1, including representing addition with objects, fingers and drawings before written equations. Counting comes first in every one of those frameworks, which is why our reading comprehension worksheets cover the step that comes just before this one.

Can I use these worksheet at home?

Absolutely! This worksheet is completely free to download and print at home. All you need is a printer and a pencil — no cost, no sign-up and no login required. You can print it as many times as your child needs.
