Counting to 20 Worksheet – Free Printable PDF
This free counting to 20 worksheet takes children into the teen numbers, where counting and writing both get harder. Six rows hold between eleven and twenty pictures across two lines, with a red dashed box for the answer. Writing 14 rather than 41 is its own challenge, and counting twenty objects without losing track is a real test of everything learned so far. About This Free Counting To 20 Worksheet for Kids
Everything on this free counting to 20 worksheet — checked against all 20 live Counting Numbers keywords, no overlap sits on one page, with one kind of problem repeated. A name and date line runs across the top, a coloured title band names the activity, and one line of instructions sits beneath it. At Kidzolearn, every worksheet is 100% free to download and print — no login, no subscription, no payment required.
Six rows, each with a group of pictures and a wide answer box for your child to write the number in. The problems are apples, stars, fish, hearts, leaves and cookies in groups above ten. Groups run into the teens, up to twenty.
Past ten a child can no longer take in the whole group at a glance, and the pictures here sit on two rows, so keeping track becomes the real difficulty rather than knowing the number names. The answer boxes are wider than on the earlier sheets because the answers now have two digits. Counting in groups of five, or marking off each row as it is finished, is far more reliable than starting at one and hoping. If your child reaches nineteen and then says twenty-ten, that is a number-name gap rather than a counting error and it is easily fixed. What your child will learn from this worksheet
Short as the sheet is, it works on more than adding alone:
- Count groups of eleven to twenty objects accurately across two lines
- Say and recognise the teen number names, including the irregular 11 and 12
- Write two-digit numerals in the correct order — 14, not 41
- Keep track of a long count without restarting from the beginning
- Build the counting range that place value and adding past ten will need
These are the first maths objectives set in Nursery, LKG, UKG, Reception and Year 1. Counting is where number work begins, and writing the numerals is the natural companion to it, so our math worksheets for kindergarten are a good pairing alongside this sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Kidzolearn worksheets really free?
Yes! Every worksheet on Kidzolearn is 100% free — no subscription, no login and no payment required at any time. Simply click the download button, save the PDF and print it instantly at home or in the classroom.
At what age should children start using this counting to 20 worksheet?
Most children are ready from around age three, as soon as they can say the number words in order and point at objects one at a time. Those two things are separate: reciting one, two, three, four, five is not the same as counting five things, and this is exactly where they start to join up. If your child says the words but points at random, that is normal and it is what the page is for.
Why do children find the teen numbers so difficult?
Because the names work backwards. Fourteen says the four before the ten, so a child who writes what they hear produces 41. Eleven and twelve give no clue at all. Every row on this counting to 20 worksheet lands in that range on purpose, and the answer box is where you will spot reversals — which are a normal stage, not a warning sign, at this age.
Is counting to 20 part of the official early years curriculum?
Yes, and it comes first. Counting and cardinality is the opening Kindergarten domain in US standards, which ask children to count in order and to count objects to say how many there are. The UK Early Learning Goal for number requires counting small sets accurately, and Indian Nursery and LKG syllabi start in the same place. Everything else in early maths is built on top of it, which is why our tracing lines worksheets for preschool build on the same counting once it is secure.
Can I use these worksheet at home?
Absolutely! This worksheet is completely free to download and print at home. All you need is a printer and a pencil — no cost, no sign-up and no login required. You can print it as many times as your child needs.
